eris is pctony's server, that is used to help serve fajita and other services, like wow

like wow ? wow is just a factoid, isn't it ?

oh th ebox has been up for 37 days
no
wow is taken from an rss feed

ah - which feed ?

see #a-h

I suppose most traffic on eris is caused by fajita and megaspaz

why are you including magic as a config file?

well, everybody needs magic

especially debian users.

no, they need salvation - a different kind of magic

Hi, what is the parameter to increase my apache max connections?

maxclients

maxclients is http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/mpm_common.html#maxclients or http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/core.html#maxclients

but see also
maxservers
or something to that effect
probably best to just start reading how apache doles out connections
it's kinda compli-cated

well - its the fact that im getting about 100 requests a second

busy server.

joebrg if that's not spam you could make some money with adsense!

yea - just launch a new sms system

quite a lot of money, actually
a what ?

a is for Apple

a sms system!
whatever that does.

all the receipts for each sms sent have to come through the system via http

yes, I heard him - we run the biggest in NL

.nl

.nl is netherlands or good

*biggestest

and some clients campaign to like 30k people at a time

1very good, thank you fajita
joebrg 30K is nothing

and for every 1 message you send, you get 2 receitps back, so yea it is pretty busy
it is when we've got a setup of like 2 servers for it

you do deliveries ? do your customers want them ?

yea
all subscribed

some of ours do, most don't bother
joebrg you in the continental US ?

na, im in the UK

cable.ntl.com ?

yea

I thought that was USian

thats a UK ISP

well, learneded something today

yep

yes, virgin
hi, virgin
5-number shortcodes suck, dude

they're the shit!

we have 3 and 4 -digit sc's

lol
that in NL though

them's teh bombzorz
yes

not unless you're a network do you get them
overhere that is

we do those *for* networks, so yeah - same here

ah right
you deal with SMS then?

although you can get 4-digits across wholesale if you like - most TV stuff is 4-digit

over here everything is 5 digit

joebrg we run the primary SMS service provider in NL, so yeah, I deal with SMS - daily

primary sms service provider?
What you use, SMPP?

we use *everything*

I've got to setup a VPN into a SMSC SMPP tomorrow
which should be a laugh

well, if you've got all the details it shouldn't take more than an hour or 2

got the details, I've never done this before though
So bit of a learning curve

but IPSEC setup can be teh bicth -especially if you're dealing with a provider that doesn't understand anything otehr than his own VPN software

lol
think their PTPP

do you know your/their hardware ?

they're greeks, and all their tech documents are in greek

hardly, operators always use tunneled IPSEC

all we can get our are the words "cisco"

oh, teh greeks - aarhgh

lol
had experience with them then?

we had some experiecne with them, it's not really workable
FGS try to get the one that speqaks English best, and let him talkto the one who understands the tech best
kick everybody else off the line

lol

seriously

We're technically working out of cyprus

that's nearly Turkey

lol

no, really
they claim it as theirs

well
only the northern part

it's not the most stable of countries, is what I'm saying

yea

Ireland anyone ?

lol

but good luck on your VPN - have you done SMPP before ? if not, it'll be an extra fun learning curve !

lol na i havent

noirin.

jMCg what about her ?

been looking at some open source projects on smpp

Ireland anyone ?

found some smsforums.net that seems quite helpful

jMCg it was not a question, really...
joebrg yes, well, the forums are imprtant if you need help - but mainly, you should already have software

well.... now that she's been highlighted for no reason at all, she's gonna have to kill you, I presume.

setting up software from scratch is... well, I'd take the rest of the week to figure it out if I were you

lol

jMCg she's more than welcome - I can just activate my stereotype detector

found some php class that should plug straight into our gateway

seen noirin

3

just need to learn the smpp syntax etc.
and sort this VPN out

fat luck, macG

well, thanks for your help adaptr - catch ya around

joebrg "just need to learn the SMPP syntax" - are you KIDDING ? SMPP is a *protocol*, don't even *think* about writing up your own, the operator won't appreciate that

yea thats what i mean't

as protocols go, it's not the hardest - it was written for gateway systems anyway

hopefully ill be saying that at 3pm tomorrow

you try setting up Nokia CIMD or Logica EMI/UCP just from the specs... you'll die screaming

leaving plenty of "pub" time

nah Atlanta

go and look at the site

I have to get things in order onths in advance for work

right, but you can hardly trust an event organizer, you have to ask the people who attend

oh i see, you wanted a real answer?
Well, I cant vouch personally, but everyone I have spoken with think they are great
isn't that right ^ ?
oh oh, /me wonders if I have upset noirin. Several hello's later, and I am still left straggling in the dark.

happy
I really gotta go, but drop me a mail and I'll get back to you when I wake up?

ok thanks, would really appreciate it!

I have a question about mod_rewrite, I am still learning regex, but im trying to figure out how to eliminate file extensions from our php webhosting scripts. so something.php?params can be called instead with something?params
is mod_rewrite the best tool for this job?

Nope.
granny?

Granny Weatherwax tells us the most important thing about magic is when _not_ to use it. The same is true of mod_rewrite.

multiviews

multiviews is http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/core.html#options or http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_negotiation.html or http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/content-negotiation.html

Should work, I would dare claim.
Any objections?
Anyone?

jMCg, thanks, i am checking that out

Anyone?
Buehler?

Buehler is this person from the movie ;o))

jMCg, i think i read about this last night a little, but what i dont understand is how to set it to even allow it without the file extension
jMCg, it looks like this article is more about how to get it to choose between a.jpg and a.gif
jMCg, i want no file extension to always be a .php file unless its a folder...

Bah.. why is nobody objecting when I'm talking bullshit at this late at night instead of going to bed
bBah.. why is nobody objecting when I'm talking bullshit at this late at night instead of going to bed/b
I should really have read your sentence to the end.
http://rewrite.drbacchus.com/rewritewiki/Arguments_2fPathInfo

what is the purpose of removing the extensions?

thanks for taking over.. I have to goto bed now o/~ good night...

thumbs, to hide the technology we're using, because its recommended by the w3c, and because its a lot cleaner
thumbs, nothing dire really, just a preference
jMCg, thanks

how about using pathinfo?
pathinfo?

pathinfo is see AcceptPathInfo

bah

humbug

AcceptPathInfo

AcceptPathInfo is http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/core.html#acceptpathinfo

well
you can easily remove the extension with mod_rewrite

i asked if mod_rewrite is what i wanted, and jMCg said no, but then later pointed me to mod_rewrite stuff

right.
it would be adequate with this scenario.

thumbs, sorry, i am the webmaster not the admin of our server, i am pretty unfamiliar with some of apache's features, forgive me if i am slow on the uptake...
ok, so mod_rewrite is a good solution to this?

y7es, it is.

you can just call your scripts with names that don't end in .php
the catch is that you need to manually set the right handler for each one

you can use a rule that would remove (hide) the extension if it's .php

but generally you don't have many of them

I believe the rewrite rule is more generic, but harder to set up

well, tastes vary

care to put the pathinfo php thing into the pathinfo factoid?

thumbs, is there a good regex pattern to use that will get the .php if none is there?

seo without mod_rewrite

seo without mod_rewrite is http://seo.phpmagazine.net/2005/08/search_engine_optimization_les_2.html

i don't have access to excise factoids
personally, i like the files to just have the right names. saves a bunch of hassle
let your yay be yay, your nay be nay, and your showsvn be showsvn

thumbs, one problem is that we want something?params to get the file something.php?params but we want something.php?params to 404, is that even possible?

you can match against ^/(.*)\.php and use $1 to retrieve the proper value
you can match against ^/(.*)\.php$ and use $1 to retrieve the proper value

see, that's one of the issues you avoid if you call the file something instead of something.php
since something.php doesn't exist, it just 404s naturally

thumbs, ok what does the .* part of the regex say? zero or more of any character?

yes.

rici, ok, what is your solution then?
rici, just calling it something without a file extension?

just call the file something instead of something.php
and put an addhandler into the config to associate something with php5-script

rici, ok, so maybe call it something.blah and attach blah to the php processor and then reroute things without extensions to .blah?

no, just call it something
with no extension
and attach something to the php processor.
you can do that
it's particularly easy if there's nothing in the directory other than php host scripts

anyone how know to install and fix coppermine photo gallery

rici, wouldn't we then need to modify our apache config every time we want to add a php file?

do php config here/

yeah, that's why it's particularly easy if the directory only includes php scripts
however, there are other solutions

rici, ok, like what?

mod_mime_magic

mod_mime_magic is phttp://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/mod_mime_magic.html or http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_mime_magic.html

mod_cern
or ummm
mod_cern_metadata?
damn, what's that called?

hi guys

rici, is there any way to have all .php files on our sever be called without the .php, and calling them with .php 404s

yes, there is

anyone know where i should do it asking me about mySQL could not locate a database called 'pics' please check the value entered for this, but how do i get this to work

but it gets really wierd

hihi

rici, i think i saw that "mod_mime_magic" in our phpinfo
rici, how would we do it with mod_mime_magic?

i have sometime apache process taking 100%cpu for a long time. i'd like to know the jobs this process are executing. lsof -p xxxxx doesn't help, it doesn't show what files are served (so i can retrace the "bogus" php file) .. any suggestion ?

Would it be worth putting in a feature request for Apache to recognise // in the first line of CGI scripts as the interpreter marker, to make it easier to use languages like Javascript?

you put something at the beginning of the php file which makes it obvious that it's a php hosting script
and then you add that pattern to mod_mime_magic's detector if it's not there already

hello, I am trying to get python running on my apache web server... I followed the appropriate steps at http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Feisty#How_to_install_Python_for_Apache_2 but when I try http://localhost/test.py which just has a print line, apache says the file could not be found (and it is only happening for .py files)

Jan`: spider monkey lets you use a standard shebang line

Unfortunately, cscript.exe, the Windows commandline interpreter, doesn't.

Jan`: you can use the windows registry to identify interpreters
there's a setting for that

rici, so your preferred approach to this though is to have all our php files without an extension on the server?

Yes. *.js is already assigned to cscript.exe

right, so you need to tell apache to use the registry

Unfortunately, Apache doesn't seem to be smart enough to just use teh windows file association.

it seems simpler to me

so I am figuring there is something wrong with the path the python interpreter is looking in, or similar, but I have no clue where to start looking.

other people may disagree

rici, is there any way to then set it so that files with no extension are treated as php files?

any ideas? Is this relevant to Apache or Python?

yes

rici, or would we have to do that file by file
rici, ok great

...oh. You can persuade Apache to use the windows filetype association?

rici then that sounds like the better solution

// SetHandler php5-script // /filesmatch

rici, ok thanks

try that, it's untested.
i'm assuming you're using php 5

yeah
php-5

if you're using 6, it's php6-script

rici, ok

if you're using 4, it's php-script unnumberd
Jan`: yes you can

rici, i think we are using the latest stable

scriptregistry?

How?

i never remember that one since i don't use windows

rici, ok thanks a bunch!

scriptinterpretersource

scriptinterpretersource is http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/core.html#scriptinterpretersource or http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/core.html#scriptinterpretersource

Jan`: ^^

*readreadread*
Ooh. Spiffy.

spiffy is /spi'fee/ adj. 1. Said of programs having a pretty, clever, or exceptionally well-designed interface. "Have you seen the spiffy X version of empire yet?" 2. Said sarcastically of a program that is perceived to have little more than a flashy interface going for it. Which meaning should be drawn depends delicately on tone of voice and context. This word was common mainstream slang during the 1940s, in a sense close to #1.

Ooh. Bot.

Danger Will Robinson!

Ooh. Seventy-three custard doughnuts!

anyone can help me out with the coppermine PHOTO hosting gallery please

Jan`: did that solve your issue?

rici, im sorry to say that we dont seem to be able to use your method
rici, i think perhaps mod_rewrite is the best solution

did it not work?

rici, no it didn't
we are using php4

what happened?
oh

500 error

500 error is meaningless.

well, use php-script instead of php5-script

not php4-script?

500 is a wierd error to get
no, unnumbered
i thought i mentioned that

do i need the slashes in there "//"?

i know it's inconsistent. i take no responsibility

rici,

no, just php-script
sethandler php-script
simple as that
inside the filesmatch thing
the // are newlines, in my sloppy get-it-on-irc style
sorry

You will be!!

it's three lines

ohhh

apc

Try using http://apache.pastebin.ca - It's a good pastebin, and is even set up to highlight Apache 'stuff'.

rici, does indentation matter, or just 3 lines?

http://apache.pastebin.ca/616968

rici, thanks!!
it works now!

oops, change the * to a +
you don't want it to match the directory
http://apache.pastebin.ca/616970
^^

rici, thanks again
pretty cool to see it work

I just got my first job in f*cking I.T woooooooooo

congratulations.

thanks

yeah liq
congrats

yay. rah rah. you want a cookie?

stop it.

com'on thumbs, the guy's having a little fun with the bot,

it's quite immature, and annoying.
do that in a PM, if you must.

HELP :: how can i set the documentroot in a fat partition?

documentroot

DocumentRoot specifies where apache should look for content. See: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/core.html#documentroot or http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/mod/core.html#documentroot or default layout.

apache returns 403 forbidden

just set the proper path
what does the error log say, exactly?

"You don't have permission to access"

what does the error log say, exactly?

ok

browser error

browser error is meaningless, you should be checking my error log

3 2007] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] (13)Permission denied: access to /favicon.ico

(13)

(13) indicates a file permissions problem. Make sure that Apache can read the file(s) and directories being accessed. See also http://wiki.apache.org/httpd//13PermissionDenied

I somehow doubt that error generated the 403
look harder

thanks

jeez, was just tryin to be funny... sorry

Ok so I have the dynamic urls worked out, but how would you rewrite mydomain.com/about.php to be mydomain.com/about/ ?

Lucias_O`Neil: strip out the filename.

thumbs -- But would it still read the file extension?

Lucias_O`Neil: I don't understand your question

thumbs -- Would it still know what kind of file it is looking for?

Lucias_O`Neil: mod_rewrite is often used to obsfuscate URLs, or redirect them.
Lucias_O`Neil: the original request is still processed

thumbs -- Ah ok, thanks.

hello
Can someone help me with a rewrite? http://pastebin.com/m27634802

so rewrite ^/(.*)\/(.*).php$ $1
or something like that.

it matches but still 404's

is that done in htaccess?

Yes

first of all, remove the leading / from the rule.
you could remove the leading / from the resulting string as well, if you set a proper rewritebase
and most importantly, make sure your htaccess file is being read
garbage

try putting junk in your htaccess file. If it's being read, you will get an Internal Server Error when accessing that resource.

ah it worked Thumbs

wonderful.

thank you

no worries

how do i create database for mySQL for coppermine photo gallery

you ask the maintainers of coppermine photo gallery

i went through the coppermine site none of that can tell how to do it

hi. Why won't RewriteRule ^(.*)abcd/$ work? ^.*$ works ...

well this channel supports configuring the apache HTTPD server

i would like to speak with you for a moment please

configuring mysql is not part of our mandate

i see\

where are you using that rule, exactly?
you can try #mysql

k

in the .htaccess of directory abcd

perhaps you need to tell us what you're trying to achieve instead.

you don't create the database
you just create the db user
the install/configure.php script should then make all the stuff
well, ok... maybe you just need to create a base db

please Ims me private you still have my Ims screen name

but that's just create database cpg or something
and no, i won't answer a private message

I want to rewrite abcd to 'script'
ok, it works now ^^

dont you remember me, that you help me how to set up the coppermine and other linux

well your rules does not capture the 'abcd' string, for one.

sorry... don't recognize the niq
*nick

pradalover, is that you, hon?

most likely.

anyway, you just need to create a database as the root mysql user

this is gene from uncure

then create a user for coppermine and give it write permissions to the database
then in the first time install.php script tell it the mysql user and the database
the install.php script will create all the tables
*create a mysql user for coppermine
mysql -u root -p
enter in mysql root password
create database gallery;
do grant command
to make new mysql user for coppermine. you can give this user whatever name you want... like cpg
with the grant command above give cpg full permissions on the gallery database

k

then go to browser and access your gallery
the install.php or whatever script should come up and then you fill in the mysql info
the install.php script then creates all the tables in the gallery db.

g'nite all

do yo remember me uncure

not really
i don't remember nicks that much

it been a long time you been helping me lot of times with the coppermine and other linux

http://dev.mysql.com/tech-resources/articles/mysql_intro.html
there's an example of the grant command

i even still have your screen name in msn or yahoo....
k

ON *.* replace that with your database name... ex. ON gallery.*
and you'll need to make your user with a host... cpg@localhost
grant all privileges on gallery.* to cpg@localhost identified by 'password_for_cpg_user';
or ... grant all privileges on gallery.* to cpg@localhost identified by 'password_for_cpg_user' with grant options;
if you want to give grant options...

k
i know you live in north cailf.

heh

hrm... sushi and tonkatsu sounds appetizing...

I love sushi, chip hates it

ah
but there is tonkatsu
:P

that looks tasty
I've never had tonkatsu before

it's just deep fried battered pork
it's like chicken katsu but with pork

anything tastes good when deep fried.

so should we go there?
because I want to

meh

Bah.

that sounds like a no

oh sure, rain on the jig parade

but spelt funny
:P
how's johnny rockets?
is it basically crap?

I don't know, I think we tried to go there once and it was clode

like fuddruckers?

*closed

i've never been to johny rockets

so what's teh vote?

well if we don't want to do johnny rockets there are lots of other places in the pruneyard
like that brewery place

oh, and that map is wrong

great

its on the southside

in fact we should go to the brewery place

of the pruneyard

just like the mapquest one last time
.

what's that place called? the rock bottom brewery?

so if we go teh pruneyard, where you wanna meet?
ah

how doi create database gallery in shell ?

that sounds like a good meetup spot

there

i am in the root of mysql

ok, now what time?

create database gallery;
ah wait!!! meet where???

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&saddr=&daddr=37.288881,-121.934263&mrsp=1&sz=17&mra=mi&sll=37.288668,-121.931419&sspn=0.004806,0.01178&ie=UTF8&ll=37.289291,-121.931419&spn=0.004806,0.01178&t=h&z=17&om=1

that loop thing

brewery or johnny rockets?

it said here" ERROR 1064 (42000): You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'create database gallery' at line 2

either

well that place is right next to the brewery
and the brewery sounds better IMO

wait, 87? did you mean 85?

er something like that
8*
the one closest to 101 and lawrence

I would if I wasn't too lazy to add channel discrepency to the script.

hmm... I think chip would know best

Anybody willing to help out a Fedora 7 noob without telling him repeatedly to check the docs which make no sense to him?

ask

If you have an apache related question, please go ahead and ask it. We will not beat it out of you. We won't bite you either, at least until we get to know you better

Hey Fajita, I'm back.
I got apache running great on windoze thanks to your help
Now I want to get it running on my Fedora 7 machine which I'm planning to use as a dedicated LAN server
every time I try to start the httpd service though I get this error message
0 no listening sockets available, shutting down Unable to open logs

is it already running? do you have multiple Listen statements on the same port/ip?
things to check.
is something else bound to the port? netstat -plnt | grep :80
to see

No way it could be running that's on a restart, as far as multiple listening statements i did but removed one of them.

no way?
please do the netstat -plnt | grep :80

what character is that after -p? a lowercase L or cap i?

lower case L
for "listening"

something not working in that comman, everytime I typr it it brings up the help list

netstat -plnt | grep :80
cut and paste

cut and paste is a bitch

cut and paste won't work I'm on my windoze box the Fedora box isn't on a live internet connection
got it
nothing is listening to 80

i added an alias for my /home/rob/Music/Music drive
but it's complaining that it's Forbidden any clues?

then you probably have multiple Listen statements for the same ip/port in your config.
permissions

Files need to be readable by the Apache user (e.g. 644). Directories and scripts need the X bit too (e.g. 755). That includes *all* parent directories of a resource. If you have a symlink, check both the source and target. If you have AllowOverride for an unreadable directory, the error message will refer to .htaccess. See also selinux

acid-trip: ^^

alias

alias is http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/mod_alias.html#alias

httpd.config shows no other listen statements

mod_dav

mod_dav is http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/mod_dav.html or http://webdav.org/mod_dav/ or http://www.webdav.org/mod_dav/install.html#apache

look for included configs
Include

Include is http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/core.html#include and can take a file, directory, or shell wildcard as an argument.

is fajita a bot?

Is RevDeMonde a hippo?

bot?

Danger Will Robinson!

I'll take that as a yes

fajita is a bot?

No, I just type really really fast.

silly girl

Hmm but user permissions, that might be something

arreyder, but if i 644 the files then i can't listen to the songs can i?

not familiar enough with Fedora 7 to know where to find those permission settings

acid-trip: sure you can
your problem is listen statements. find them

alrighty

follow the includes

arreyder, you familar with mod_dav?

acid-trip: just a little

acid-trip: i am

there ya go

i'm trying to set up mod_dav so one of my user's can login and upload music to me
any ideas?

thinking is *hard*!

er, wait. i read that as mod_dav_svn. sorry

lol
just plain mod_dav

hey guys, could someone help me out with a proxying reverse proxy?

ask

If you have an apache related question, please go ahead and ask it. We will not beat it out of you. We won't bite you either, at least until we get to know you better

i have mod_disk_cache loaded ... and the cache directory set .. but it seems empty
i don't have access to the back end, and it's not even running windows, so no way of doing tail -f access.log | grep $front_end_ip_address

imMute, whats different in mod_dav_svn anyways?

*it's not running linux

acid-trip: everything

cacheenable

cacheenable is ?http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/mod_cache.html#cacheenable

maybe i should install that one then
now wonder where thats located on bsd in ports

do you have access to the config?

looking into CacheEnable
not at the moment
(back end config)

hi, how do i change user and password for mysql....

oooh should I be using the loopback address instead of the LAN address does that make a difference?

wtf?

depends on how available the server needs to be, loopback will be only local requests

because I followed the includes and still haven't found another listen statement that conflicts

ask #mysql

ah, since i did CacheEnable ... /var/cache/apache2/... has stuff in it ...

cool

is there a way to set many CacheRoots ...
i tried doign that in the virtualhost config ... but it failed

hehe
see for mysql crap i use webmin

cacheroot context

server config, virtual host

handy little program

yes can be used in each of those contexts

oh ... going to try again then

allows you to do everything through
laststars, look for webmin
or phpMyAdmin

phpMyAdmin is http://www.phpmyadmin.net/

one of those two can help
webmin

webmin is a web-based configuration tool, allowing for configuration of a wide variety of applications, available at http://www.webmin.com/ evil

good but odd news when I overwrote with the loopback it started fine

hrmm trying to setup .htaccess with 1and1 hosting but for some reason it never works

ok so I tried to set it back to the LAN address, and guess what same error as before

does it have a lan address?
ifconfig -a

I assigned the ethernet device a static IP it better have a LAN addy

look
that would be a good reason for a bind to fail

unet addr 192.168.1.111
inet rather

and what did your listen line look like?

Listen 192.168.1.111:80
SELinux is not installed btw

!redirectmatch
redirectmatch?

redirectmatch is http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/mod_alias.html#redirectmatch

I think I found an error
was missing in the Fedora HTTP Server Configuration applet
so the address looked like 192.168.1.11180 instead of 192.168.1.111:80

I hope that is a fancy name for vim?

nope still getting the error
Address already in use...

make sure Apache is not already running. Check if another program is already bound to configured IP:port (on linux, run netstat -pntl) or check for multiple "Listen" directives in your config, make sure you're running the command as root-on windows check Skype and antivirus software

good bot.
fajita++

yes I'm running as root

, any idea what proxy: ap_get_scoreboard_lb(0|1|2|3) failed in child X for worker http://... ?

nothing else is bound to 80
no multiple liten directives
next step?

back end unavailabe, try appending retry=1 to end of proxpass statement for quicker recovery

next step is $to be able to configure a DNS server

fajota forget next step
oops
fajita forget next step

I forgot next step

I'm out of ideas.

the back end IS available ... it works requesting the back end directly ... AND the front-end returns the file correctly ... and it's not from cache since i never loaded that file before

hmm, try a stop and start on the proxy
not a restart

note taken

anyway to get linux to tell me which version of apache this is?

httpd -v

httpd -v returns Apache's version number. httpd -V returns compile settings, too.

or apache2 -v

apache2 -v returns Apache's version number. apache2 -V returns compile settings. (but only on Debian)

Apache/2.2.4 that is the current versin correct?

yep

then I dunno what the hell is going on
Whoa

I know kung-fu...

hey with the loopback enabled I can access it with the machine
Now that's damn odd

yes, thats what I meant by local access

well that's all I REALLY care about
I just need apache running for webmin

and is the very definition of loopback with regard to network access

That way I can get nwn server running
I always considered loopback for local machine only not LAN

wait a sec
terminology problems
loopback is the lo intercace, 127.0.0.1
you bind to it when you only intend for local processes to access the service
I dont think we are talking about the same loopback

oh we are

localhost/loopback
netstat -lntp | grep 80

the apache addy is now set to 127.0.0.1 which I always thought was the same as localhost/local machine

whats it look like?
yes it is, you are correct

one sec lemme copy this

0
or 127.0.0.1:80

0 is

000 0.0.0.0:* LIST EN
0 0.0.0.0:* LIST EN
And that's using 127.0.0.1 as the addy in httpd.conf

see how the numbers are different? you have two instances of httpd running. which is why port 80 was blocked

0 in your
or that

/etc/init.d/apache stop/restart doesnt necessarily kill all the httpds laying around

which is the very first thing I told you to check :/

`killall httpd` on the other hand.

is correct.

Ok so how do I manually kill
kill PID?
Still very green to Linux

`killall httpd`
kills them all

No way it could be running that's on a restart, as far as multiple listening statements i did but removed one of them.

no way?

:P
time waster!

LMAO I swear i stopped it... well hit stop like 6 times arreyder

thanks for noticing that immute
immute++ #ready with a fresh pair of eyes

yeah, it stops the PID stored in the lock file

you hit stop?!

but wait wouldn't it have two instances running since I was viewing it on the server and on this machine?

which if two got started some how, only the last one would get killed

hit stop on what?
apachectl

apachectl is http://httpd.apache.org/docs/programs/apachectl.html or just a shell script. It can be hacked to set things like library paths, umasks, etc

assume a control panel like thingy

Service configuration applet in Fedora

hmmm, people use those?

system-config-httpd?

system-config-httpd is horrible

nope

you must not have ever run that netstat I asked you to do the first time?

I did
and it didn't show any httpd services running

hmm, then it was not running at that moment

that's why I'm baffled too

ah well

ok lemme try to bind it to the LAN addy again
sonofabiscuit...
same error

is apache running on the LAN addy though? try it in firefox

and for the record I used killall httpd twice and stopped it in the service configuration
I just redid all the listen statements with 192.168.1.111

"all" ?

"all" is )one option...Or read the Apache manual

how many are there?

he claimed only one...

unless the box is multi homed you only need one
or two if you are doing ssl too

well one for each port

"Listen 80" "Listen 443"

well there's the listen statement in etc/conf/httpd.conf and the one in etc/httpd/conf.d/httpd.conf

that would be your problem

one statement two files

grrrr

not possible

we went through this :/

two identical statments that fuck everything up in two separate files, yes

Ahhhhh

arreyder told you a loooong time ago to make sure theres only ONE
ONE ONE ONE
MORE than ONE cause PROBLEMS

I misunderstood arreyder, sorry
I thought you menat multiple listens in one file

it's ok, I'm just tired and grumpy

No worries
which at one point there was more than one listen in one of the files

it's all one file, as far as apache sees it

for future reference, starting iwth httpd.conf and everything it includes, is all ONE BIG file to apache

ok so how do I get rid of the second file?

think of every included file as just an extention of the main one

dont, it might have something you need in it

I mean do I comment it out in the includes?

yes

Ok

but it will probably break the other things that were in that file
god konws what that is though

bingo

and bingo was his name-o.

thanks guys

blame redhat

Awww but Redhat is what I'm cutting my linux teeth on
Well Fedora

Fedora is http://fedoraproject.org/ - Fedora is a Linux operating system that showcases the latest in free and open source software. Fedora is always free for anyone to use, modify, and distribute. It is built by people across the globe who work together as a community: the Fedora Project.

Same difference

its not nearly as bad as ubuntu.

true

and Ive never heard of conf.d/httpd.conf
whats in it?

yeah, what is that?

Gentoo was a pain, and unbuntu just gives me the chills
noidea, but it's in there

sounds like gentoo

so open it up and pastebin it

apc

Try using http://apache.pastebin.ca - It's a good pastebin, and is even set up to highlight Apache 'stuff'.

one sec first I have to send the file to this machine
erm
well oddly enough that was looking for all the conf files in conf.d

what?

and thats where my php.conf and such are
there's also a manual.conf in there

yeah in conf.d/
but whats in httpd.conf ?
conf.d/httpd.conf

and a system-config-httpd.conf

ugh

ugh is correct

yum remove system-config-httpd

which looks like an exact duplicate of the regular httd.cof
httpd.conf rather

nuke it

nuked
httpd restarted sucessfully
you guys are the best

i was able to determing that my front end reverse proxy isn't caching at all ...

anyone here familiar with using a mac as a webdav client?

EnableCache is set for both the absolute http://url of the back end AND the local ProxyPass(Reverse) url
CacheRoot is set

mm

mmm

mmm, raspberry tarts with whipped cream

i'm still having problems to get my front end proxy cache the content from the back end
every request is resent to the back end .. and responds with a 304

hello.. i have a question about getting a virtual host going. i am running apache 2.2.4 on MacOS X (installed via Darwin ports). when i try to access, i get 403 forbidden. error log says (13) permission denied: access to / denied. i can pastebin my config files too..
httpd.conf: http://hashbin.com/a9e.html and httpd-vhosts.conf: http://hashbin.com/aa1.html

you have Deny from all change that to Allow from all and try that

allowing access to / is not wise

in httpd.conf

rather point DocumentRoot to some path /path/to/docroot and allow access there with Directory section

ok

harpal, Allow from all didn't work, and yea I realize it should remain Deny from all for security. shouldn't Order deny, allow and Allow from all in my Directories in my VirtualHost open things up?

on directory you are using that contain wwwuser and www group permission

yes, i have chown everyting to www:www, and just to test have chmod everything 777

try this http://httpd.apache.org/docs/1.3/vhosts/examples.html

304

304 is Not Modified. Usually means that the version in the cache is the current one so will not be loaded from the server. Sent in response to a request having an If-Modified-since that time. header, when the answer is not modified since

oh, so are you saying that the server is actually NOT serving the whole thing ... just the headers, saying it's not modified?

harpal, nothing really helpful there, thank you though. i've got to get some sleep.. will be back tomorrow. thanks again all.

hey guys

I guess you want the rest of us to ignore you then, lkthomas

when I click on a .htm file on apache

ooh

it turns out to be download that file
which option did I miss to config that ?

im trying to redirect http://mysite.org/printstory.php?storyid=918 to http://mysite.org/story/918. I added this rule in the vhost file, RewriteRule ^/printstory.php?storyid=(.*) /story/$1 [PT,L] but still it doesnt redirect. What could be wrong here?

what are you expecting $1 to match?

with (.*)

rewritelog

rewritelog is http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/mod_rewrite.html#rewritelog http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_rewrite.html#rewritelog. Use this logging to help design and track rewrite; see also rewriteloglevel; and cannot be used from .htaccess

can I set the forwarded status of an http request sent to a remote host in .htaccess?

forwarded status?

im seeing the rewrite log also. Its at runlevel 9. I see this (2) init rewrite engine with requested uri /printstory.php

I get $_SERVER['FORWARDED_STATUS'] = 404 in php
I want to change it to 200

for somereason apache doesnt consider the string after "?" while applying the rewrite rules

cool I can use that too

There's http://wiki.apache.org/httpd/RewriteVirtualHandler, assuming your script does everything and http://wiki.apache.org/httpd/RewriteQueryString assuming.. I don't know WTF...

can I mod_rewite to proxy requests to (top-level) files without extensions to http://localhost:8002/one/place/, and everything else to http://localhost:8002/someplace/else ?
i.e. I have php5-only web app running on that port, which I need to grant the outside world access to it
however, I'd like to route requests for urls such as https://www.hpp-register.com/wizard.html/GRP one place, while requests for https://www.hpp-register.com/wizard.html/filename.ext another

ooh
woot
yay
hm
so, would ^/(.*) work?

ok, i read through the wiki, so please correct me if im wrong if this is not the correct rewrite rule "RewriteRule ^/printstory.php?storyid=[(.*)] /story/$1 [PT]

so, RewriteRule ^/(.*) http://localhost:8002/blah/script.php?blah=$1 [P] ?

anybody here by chance that knows tomcat ?

If I'm using name-based vhosts, is there any way to prevent queries to unused domain names from going to one of the other vhosts?

default vhost

The first-listed virtual host is always the default one when using name based virtual hosts. See http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/apache/2004/01/08/apacheckbk.html for more details.

thanks

np

ugh

ugh is correct

hmm.. I am trying to get my head around virtual hosts and such
I understand it can be used to switch "contexts" based on hostname in the request
is there a way to do the same thing based on the first part of the path instead?

hm... this defaulting to the first vhost business is kind of a pain if you are using the debian site-available/enabled scheme, like me

is this correct now ?? RewriteRule ^/story/?([^/]*)/? \ /printstory.php?storyid=$1 [PT]

I hate regex

help !!

look quite okay....
the first vhost is called 000-default......

but im trying to redirect http://mysite.org/printstory.php?storyid=918 to http://mysite.org/story/918. It just doesnt feel right

thecoolone19- it's the other way around

i tried it RewriteRule ^/printstory.php?storyid=(.*) /story/$1 [PT,L] but this didnt work either

damnit
you don't listen, do you?

i do
i read the wiki

hm
you don't redirect a php script to a non php script :P

are the sites-enabled files guaranteed to be parsed in alphabetical order?

nope. They depend on your LC_COLLATE setting what alphabetical is.

there in the example at the bottm they gave example with /store.php?category=computer&action=browse&argument=b&page=7 to /store/computer/browse/b/7/ but it had a "\" in the rule which confused me
^^robert_

\ escapes something not meant to be interpreted as regex
like \.
. is used by apache's regex engine
so if you want to use it, escape it first
what's wrong with 'RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^(*.css|*.png|*.jpg|*.jpeg)$' ?
oooh

the reason im trying to redirect a php script to a story page is because we no longer use php for print pages. We use print CSS. so i need to redirect these

ah
okay

okay, so as long as I keep LC_COLLATE constant, the include order for the sites-enabled directory will be consistent?

i hope now you understand why im doing the redirect

yeah

is this right now ? RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^printstory.php?storyid=([0-9]{3})(&?)(.*)$ [NC] RewriteRule !^/(printstory(.*))$ /story/%1?%3 [R=301,L]

uh, that's a bit out of my league

hmm ok

pretty much.

sweet, thanks

the other possibility is to putt *all* vhosts after the default vhost in 00-default.

that pretty much gets rid of all of the advantages of the sites-enabled scheme though...

yep, that's why I like this solution so much.

jMCg, can I mod_rewite to proxy requests to (top-level) files without extensions to http://localhost:8002/one/place/, and everything else to http://localhost:8002/someplace/else ?

well thank you

You have to actually *edit* the config to change it/break it.
are you asking me, because you want to know or because the way you do it doesn't work?
