they are. We just need to find the right tool for the right fool^H^H^H^Hn00b.

back.
Undefined subroutine &ow::htmltext::str2html called at /usr/lib/cgi-bin/openwebmail/shares/ow-shared.pl line 1286.
can someone kindly give me a hand?
Google Perl str2html OR cpan htmltext
http://search.cpan.org/dist/perl-5.8.8/INSTALL
the only problem is, i don'thave a /usr/ dir
that *is* a problem, yes
how do you start X, then ?
that's pretty normal for Windows, isn't it.....
sssh
.....
You can also run your secure web server without a passphrase. This is convenient because you will not need to enter the passphrase every time you start your secure web server. But it is highly insecure and a compromise of the key means a compromise of the server as well.
Surely it means a communications compromise, rather than a server compromise?
Anyone know how to configure monit to restart a service instead of stop/starting it?
i'm using debian
stop start IS restart. If you want 'reload' [of config files] take a look into
what package install str2html or cpan htmltext
graceful
apachectl graceful
apachectl graceful is how you restart apache without dropping any client connections. Workers in keepalive will retain old config until they time out. Be patient, or set KeepAliveTimeout lower
jMCg, no but its weird
it says the service is already running
when it stop/starts it
but if i ps -ax
there is no apache service
then when monit trys to stop start it says already running
generally the key will be readable by root only. so if it's comprimised, it must be because the rest of the system has been too
what system are we talking about -- what is monit?
wouls make install delete my old config files?
-HUP is different from -TERM and start
nope. make install keeps your old config files [nomatter how much they are crap]
ACK
and how about apt-get install?
gentoo. is my distro
restart doesn't kill the parent process, so can't be used for moving the error log or loading new modules
should ask you what to do wit it, but keep your old generally, if you ever altered it.
monit is a service that checks if a process died and tries to restart it
we very rarely see people using monit with apache, perhaps because it very rarely dies
gets a lot of discussions on the maingrel lists though
mongrel even
try #perl
btw.. what is the profered way to run Ruby stuff on Apache -- without suck.
rails
rails is ggetting a lot of good press. I've rolled mischko's own from some custom code and pieces laying around.
could having a new libc6 and apache 1.3.33 make apache leak memory?
the_sniff the bare fact of having apache 1.3.33 could be the cause of many problems
I said without suck :P
please upgrade to something from this century
lol
i looked at mod_ruby. it's not quite like you suggested where it runs a new ruby process per request, but it's simillar. more like fastcgi.. it keeps a pool of ruby processes running and pipes scripts to them
adaptr so i must upgrade u say?
the_sniff why wouldn't you ? how old is this installation ?
but generally i'd say mongrel is the best option, at the moment
I didn't suggest that. It was iSteve.
heh
what kind of worries me about mod_ruby is this....
for one thing you'll be ignored less. we tend to let a lot of 1.3 questions drop.
dunno since like 2003 :s
probably waiting a few million years for mod_carbon to mature...
anything other than /etc/apache i should backup?
the_sniff backup ? for what ?
for the apt-get install apache
Oh.
erm.. no
i don't wanna get fired
Interesting.
interesting is not always good
Well this time it is!
jmcg@Laptorix ~/Projects/mod_ruby % svn up
U lib/apache/rails-dispatcher.rb
Updated to revision 133.
mod_ruby is alive again!
the_sniff if you intend to upgrade a *live* production installation of apache 1.3.33 to 2.0x, you don't upgrade at all
so im good to go?
no not to 2
debian's apache upgrade process sucks
worked for me.
so what should i do? build from sources 1.3.37 ?
you install apache 2.0x php 5.x and mysql 5.0x on a NEW server and transfer all of your configuration; then you proxy the requests to the old server to the new one and test until satisfied
THEN you upgrade and re-transfer configs and content
but seriously, if you have to ask this, then don't
adaptr++
i wanna upgrade to 1.3.37
not to 2
you probably know which modules to enable though. we get a few questions on here from people who update to 2.2 and find their auth is busted 'cos the package didn't enable mod_authz_user or mod_authn_file
and im asking to be sure
why not ?
cause i dont wanna fuck up more
cause im sick right now (((((
then you don't upgrade either - you investigate the source of the problems and FIX IT
it does. apache2-common contains those and enables them on default. I would dare claim.
k
maybe it's just those who keep old configs
I kept part of the old config... Great parts, actually.
well the thing is i think the libc6 is having problems with the current apache
since i updated openssh for security reasons
the_sniff what does that even mean "the libc6"
and what does oipenssh have to do with libc6 ?
when i installed it it asked for me to upgrade libc
and you DID ?!?
ugh
ugh is correct
why :X
but thenagain.. I upgraded from friday on yesterday... Rebooted yesterday, cleaned up some more... etc.. Now everything works quite fine... Load is somewhere between 3 and 6 as opposed to 13 and 30...
it won't let me do it
would't
if I had any say in it, I'd force/coerce/advise you to switch to FreeBSD, where these kinds of fsckup aren't easily done
lol
even i dont have a say in it :p
I'm such a lucky boy... *dances happily*
then tell me, why do you admin a server you don't know how to..well, admin ?
cause no one else is doing it
and im in a learning procedure
on a production server ?
besides. all i wanted to do is code
yup i guess lol
where is the test platform you code against ?
the identical production copy one uses to develop new code ?
nope
but it was already updated
only one serverhad that fuckups
teh fsckups, they are expensive
(
Solaris!
see that the problem with linux. updating one thing fucks everything up
i rather have DLL hell
Hahaha.
æãééï ðå im serious
How is that the case?
Well, for starters, how did you "update one thing"?
Replaced a library with an *incompatible* version?
well if u did that on windows or smth it'd tell u some files are way too old and i'd put 'em in the install itself :s
As I mentioned above, I did an upgrade of a productive Debian Sarge system to Etch and it went fine.
But thenagain.. I don't suck all that much as admin :O
apt-get
Any objections?
Anyone?
Which OS?
jMCg neither do i!~@#!@#!# :X
debian
debian is "we complicate it for you so you don't have to" or see /usr/share/doc/apache*/README.Debian* or http://wiki.apache.org/httpd/Platform/DebianLike
Which version?
3.1
3.1 is of 2004 or before I think
rofl wtf
do an upgrade to Etch.
fajita a bot?
a bot is a methal box with batteries
That's ancient. Update to the latest version of that release, then update to the next release, then update again to that release, adn so on until you've finally made it to Etch.
the system can't be all that productive if they're trusting the administration to YOU. So upgrade for the sake of stability.
ëåñ àîààîàî ùê lol
/j #Debian on freenode of oftc and /msg dpkg sarge-etch
well im not that bad. and all that flaming isn't that nice :`
unix faq?
unix faq is http://get.a.clue.de/faq.html
I've only had one problem with library issues since Debian Potato.
And that library issue I had was because I was downgrading from Sid to Sarge, which was... challenging, but I pulled it off
if it was my server hosting i'd probably be the same
but my hands are tied for most stuff
you got root?
Ahh, that's no fun.
yeah
tied up decision wise
then do the upgrade.
Tell them afterwards.
I did it the same way (:
lol
Btw boys, the mail server is down because I did an dist-upgrade -- I'll fix it after the shower.
well i'd get sent to sleep with the fish :p
You need failover, then.
you making any money with the thing?
Two systems (virtual systems, perhaps), you upgrade one, get it going sweet, while the other handles the load.
Hmm... Arafangion did we already mention to the_sniff that Debian will discontinue security upgrades for Sarge starting 2008?
No, but who, other than Microsoft, maintain ancient archaic software?
really? lol
(And I guess MS has to do that, for the simple matter that upgrades are a PITA)
IBM.
And actually, in your case, if you have such a mission-critical Apache system that you really want to upgrade manually at your pace, rather than Debian's pace, I'd compile it yourself.
I haven't had much dealings with IBM - before my time.
sure.. install gcc on a mission critical and soon to be vunerable system
One could always cross-compile.
Damn I'm too literal today
fun [the way admins define it] is nothing you want to do on or for a mission critical system
Maintaining your own software not written by yourself is what I would define as "fun".
NOT define as fun, rather.
jMCg what wrong with installing gcc?
users being able to test local exploits against ur server ?
nothing... if you install it in a vm that you only boot when you need to compile host a package....
anyways... is your mission critical server anything that pays your rent?
GOD DAMN IT
not my rent lol
Dos it cost you more money than it earns?
anyways. now i hate apt :x
don't think so and its not my money :
:p
It's a tool.
Learn how to use it.
yeah but i used to like using it
I AM HUNGRY
I CANNOT WORK LIKE THIS.
Fortuantely it's sunday and I don't.
Here, have a biscuit.
I just took it off the carpet, I think I got it this year.
Salmon steak. Still frozen inside.
~
That's gross.
nope.. it's great.
Really really great.
It shouldn't be frozen inside! It should be sliced thingly, and eaten raw, perhaps with dill, or a mild soy sauce, maybe with a touch of washabi.
it's perfect. Also I'm hungry and didn't care about preperations...
I like to cook.. sure.. but I also like simple stuff. And this was really simple (:
hi
In any case, without preparations, how did you get it frozen only on the inside?
Does anyone here know about port forwarding??
Make an iron plate hot. Hotter. HOTTER. Put the stuff directly from the fridge on the plate, turn it around, put it on a plate, eat it.
You COOK it?
O_o
Cook?
port forwarding
Please pass the Fonseca.ee http://portforward.com
Are both starting and ending ports 80?
it doesn't really matter, dos it?
well isnt it the default?
I used it before but it just stopped working
hi there
I stopped using it, and then I went back and I can't figure it out
hi hank
i am running debian etch with apache 2.2. i am using this config for a virtualhost: http://paste.debian.net/32777 and exactly the same for another virtualhost (geek-girls.de). www.geek-girls.de and geek-girls.de display the same content but
www.netwichtig.de and netwichtig.de differ. the content on netwichtig.de is apaches 'default' virtualhost. can someone explain that?
faq1
exactly. For example, NameVirtualHost *:80 must be used with VirtualHost *:80
was that for me?
yes.
Just to be sure
do i need to forward port 443
nothing in the error log regarding that...
was that for me too?
i haven't a clue, hank
oh thats a bot?!
whats a bot
fajita?
so i need to add NameVirtualHost?
no.
Namevirtualhost
Namevirtualhost is http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/core.html#namevirtualhost or http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/core.html#namevirtualhost or
You must specify only one NameVirtualHost directive, hopefully with an IP address or a *. It says on which interfaces should Apache listen to name based vhosts requests, nothing more.
ok then i don't understand what you wanted to tell me :-/
first you understand how name virtual hosts work
vhost samples
vhost examples
Look at these for examples http://wiki.apache.org/httpd/Recipes/ExampleVhosts :: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/vhosts/examples.html :: http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/vhosts/examples.html :: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/vhosts/examples.html
is anyone running a server on AT&T DSL?
This page does not exist yet. You can create a new empty page, or use one of the page templates. Before creating the page, please check if a similar page already exists.
Recipes/ExampleVhosts
thanks, I'll fix it.
in the mean time take a look at: http://wiki.apache.org/httpd/ExampleVhosts
just wanted to tell you that link :-p i run moinmoin as well on my server host and found its suggestions
i have read the docs on name based virtual hosts more than once and as i said: exactly the same config works with geek-girls.de. i just can't find the difference between the two domains.
Look at these for examples http://wiki.apache.org/httpd/ExampleVhosts : http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/vhosts/examples.html
okay, jMCg.
is there anything obviously wrong about the config?
hank, tried to put some serveraliases in the vhosts_
http://wootgnu.org/files/configs/example-vhost.conf
like that or so_
ifmodule
sorry, didn't quite get that.
ok sorry
You will be!!
look at the url i gave you.. there you have serveraliases.. so that ockelbo.kicks-ass.org and ockelbo.gidzz0r.se goes to the same dsocumentroot
yes? and what do you mean to say with that?
My httpd.conf is full with ifmodule tags and someone told me that I should remove them all. But should I remove them without changing the rest?
remember my issue? well i upgraded apache to a version i have on other servers and the problem continues
wasnt that the issue for you?
me? no i had high memory usage or did i not mention it in this room?
you're a fan of salad fingers.....
that you got the wrong document root for some hostnames?
not fun working with servers while having a fever
I knew you're a perv... but.. I didn't know it was that bad :P
not really... the serveralias www.netwichtig.de works, servername netwichtig.de doesnt. _exactly_ the same setup for another domain works just fine...
apache2 -S
I'm suspecting that vhost fuckage is afoot -- but I cannot tell, because you only pasted ONE vhost.
are you putting your vhosts in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled?
haha jMCg
no, in sites-available. then i link to sites-enabled or use a2ensite $filename. just a sec i will paste the working vhost.
http://paste.debian.net/32780
whatever.. here's my tip: Put them all in 00-default.
hank you have no Directory block - at all !
also, VirtualHost * - yegh
huh? line 7?
why is that bad?
no idea if he wants to access this vhosts ever, but well...
what difference does that make?
hank how do you think anybody's ever going to see it ?
* == *:*
jMCg I know, but that wasn't my point - he has one Directory block in that vhost - for root
so either nobody has access, or he gives everybody the same access to root as he gives them to the docroot
what are you talking about? all sites work just fine, only netwichtig.de is making problems. and i have about 8 other pages configured.
which is.. brrrr
hank it's a mess
you have no access control whatsoever, things are going to bite you later - or sooner
but the site you pasted was not the one having the problem, so what am I looking for ?
ok, i can't quite follow you what the problem is... whats wrong about the directory block?
there isn't one
at least there's no ExecCGI...
i pasted two: http://paste.debian.net/32777 and http://paste.debian.net/32780
jMCg true, dat
hank and what is the order in which these are loaded ?
do you mind if I call you Azaria ? or Duckman, even ?
no wait, that was another show...
cat /etc/sitend-enabled/*
paste that.
/etc/apache2/sites-enabled
Whatever.
Some people eat hot dogs
losing focus ? :P
megaspaz likes anything
jMCg hates everyone
"fail" when trying to start apache server.. Could that be due to misconfiguration in httpd.conf? It's been working before.
loves telling ...
megaspaz teh homozexual!
fajita kick jMCg in the nads!
rotten even.. wow
yes. try starting it directly with apachectl start
Thanks.. Got the errormsg
i thought you were going to teh play area
started raining heavily
oh
he must be all playa-ed out
play suspended
bummer
i bet amy's pissed
:P
yeah, pretty much
yeah, i'd be pissed too...
http://paste.debian.net/32781
a href="http://paste.debian.net/32781"http://paste.debian.net/32781/a
and line 210
Options FollowSymLinks Indexes ?
yah
in teh directory / block
oh yah, that's a silly
bad hank
o_O
find / -type ARGH -name hank
find / -type ARGH -name hank -exec rm -rf {} \;
system screen buffer overflow... sending init 6 signal...
and why is that silly?
netwichtig.de
that's the one that isn't working?
yes
directory /
is a filesystem directory, not a URL path. If you put options in this block, don't be surprised when whatever you're trying to do doesn't work.
argh duh
which reminds me, what isn't working about this vhost?
can i just leave the directory block out or should i have one for the doc roots?
compare http://www.netwichtig.de with http://netwichtig.de
ok
so this page is static or is it generated?
static
static is )more secure? that's an um interesting pov
the page on the non-www, is from which vhost?
the default
the default is with mod_php, not fastcgi
at the very top in the paste.
shush
huh?
'g'
please paste cat /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/* and apache2 -S
That should tell you how wrong your vhost config is.
basically the serveralias is working but the servername is passing through...
the apache2 -S output would be nice
indeed
i pasted the cat already: http://paste.debian.net/32781
i am just trying to find out what apache2 -S does before i run it
httpd -S
httpd -S tells you what your virtualhost configuration is.
'cept debian renames httpd to apache2 just to confuse matters
httpd -h
Should tell you what what does.........
ok...
http://paste.debian.net/32782 seems to explain it...
but i dont really understand why he uses 'netwichtig.de' as the default. its nowhere in the config for that vhost. reverse dns perhaps?
yes, that's possible if your main config section has no ServerName
it's possible that you set up the dns wrong...
it's the first vhost loaded, and it's the ServerName you specified in apache2.conf
is people.apache.org down or is it just me?
like you did a forward on netwichtig.de instead doing an A record or something
servertokens people.apache.org
Couldn't get a useful value for http://people.apache.org
when you do a forward, the forwarding server loses the host value and sends the ip address instead...
that's the only thing i can think of
nope. no servername in apache2.conf.
netwichtig.de. 32507 IN A 213.133.111.59
i'm getting a 404 error when doing netwichtig.de
File Not Found.
I'm not... HTTP/1.1 200 OK
curl -I
http://netwichtig.de
shit
shit is solid excrement... please don't use such language!
fsckin' x-windows copy/paste
i am so confused now...
It's the windows copy/paste that gets me annoyed.
I copy, and I copy, and I copy, but it refuses to paste!
from livehttpheaders, it looks like the request is getting short curcuited somewhere... it's only requesting the favicon and that's it...
-_-;
hello guys i was reading the README.bayes of SA and there is the line GRANT UPDATE, SELECT, INSERT ON bayes_vars_id_seq TO username;
but I cant find the bayes_var_id_seq in the example TABLES
gf is waiting with breakfast... bbs
And that's related to apache... how?
you suck :-/
SA is form apache
telnet's showing a 200 though
s/form/from/
was apache2 -S output pasted?
i see they have a own channel
i will go there
This is mostly the webserver.
yeah
where at?
compare http://paste.debian.net/32782 and http://paste.debian.net/32781
compare a href="http://paste.debian.net/32782"http://paste.debian.net/32782/a and a href="http://paste.debian.net/32781"http://paste.debian.net/32781/a
um... did anyone have him restart apache?
OH dear....
netwichtig.de's fine on apache2 -S
it's not.
oh yeah
it isn't
I see three references to it.
Which is not good.
it's set as default
Somewhere....
default server netwichtig.de (/etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default:2)
so ...
there's a spamassassin channel. ask chanserv: /msg chanserv list *spam*
grep -R Server /etc/apache2/* | grep netwichtig.de
-R ?
recursive
iirc, -r and -R are the same thing
ah, alias for -r
for grep that is
well, no - -R was the original option
but anyhoo... someone have him restart apache and redo apache2 -S
-r did not mean the same until a few versions back
Are we talking about GNU grep or POSIX?
only thing i can think of is he did a change and didn't restart apache
do we care?
they both work
hehe
(:
Anyong gota spare T2000?
well, it's got "debian" in the name - did you expect anything good to happen ?
hrm...

can someone please take a look at this .htaccess? the rewrite rules somehow don't apply -a href="http://www.pastebin.ca/620428"http://www.pastebin.ca/620428/a
garbage
try putting junk in your htaccess file. If it's being read, you will get an Internal Server Error when accessing that resource.
every request for base/calendar/ should be redirected to base/wp-calendar.php
yeah, i had those errors before
what?
no, the .htaccess is read by the server
but somehow it won't work out properly :|
(nice simpsons ref btw) what is the $ in the url?
and your allowoverride line from the main config is what?
dunno, just copy pasted
lemme take a look
allowoverride megaspaz
05 looks like a bad line
afaics, you only have an old target and nowhere to rewrite to
there is no allowoverride set in httpd.conf
well there has to be... or your htaccess file wouldn't be read
what distro are you on?
lemme grep on all files in the conf directory
it's a suse linux 9.0 i think
should i please line 04 and line 05 in one line?
no
i'm thinking you need to put a space between $ and wp-calendar.php
k
good point
Where? On top of your head?
coneheads!
that's a funny movie
funny?
Don't flatter yourself. You're not funny.
fajita, sorry
I should think so too
heh
fajita++
the space didn't help
also i can find no alloworverride setting at all in /etc/apache2
well i also see rewritebase in there... i'll let noodl analyze that one to see if it's necessary
help for noob
No help is available for for, I'm afraid.
it's usually spelt AllowOverride so try grep -ri
k
what the?
the is more than one domain with the same IP
bot
I am a bot. I am not a sentient being. I cannot hold intelligent conversations.
AllowOverride is set to all
which context?
Directory context
server config, virtual host
which one exactly?
help noob
Whoops! That's not the name of a module.
root
Root is fun - I can play BOFH
directory /?
is a filesystem directory, not a URL path. If you put options in this block, don't be surprised when whatever you're trying to do doesn't work.
what did you mean by "base/calendar"? is base the hostname or something else?
would like to know how to change the url that is displayed when browsing to apache server from mysite/apache-default to just mysite
base is the subdomains root
should i place it in some virtual host conf?
an example, please
the allow override?
Allow may be used in .htaccess files if AllowOverride is set to Limit
comment out the redirectmatch line in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default
will do. cheers
[or upgrade to Etch and apache 2.2 which has sane defaults ;]
of course this is jMCg talking about sane... yeah, right!
so, is there some kind of error log i can look into?
i just keep getting 404s, though
well this teh rewrite... so...
eat my shorts, or something like that.
rewritelog
rewritelog is http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/mod_rewrite.html#rewritelog http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_rewrite.html#rewritelog.
Use this logging to help design and track rewrite; see also rewriteloglevel; and cannot be used from .htaccess
rewriteloglevel
rewriteloglevel is http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/mod/mod_rewrite.html#rewriteloglevel. RewriteLogLevel 9 is log everything...
can we see an example url? possibly a live one?
aye, i'll send it in priv
pics please!
oh not that kind of priv msg
:/
then restart apache, yeah?
yeah
megaspaz-- # No.
commandline?
yeah. On the commandline.
apachectl
apachectl is http://httpd.apache.org/docs/programs/apachectl.html or just a shell script. It can be hacked to set things like library paths, umasks, etc
you are really helpful, not!
apachectl restart
apachectl restart is the command to restart apache
apachectl graceful
apachectl graceful is how you restart apache without dropping any client connections. Workers in keepalive will retain old config until they time out. Be patient, or set KeepAliveTimeout lower
apachectl --help
no what?
no girls for you. Not even pics. No. Noooo.
meanie
set up rewritelog and rewriteloglevel
I installed using netinstall and followed a guide. I have no man or doc and apachectl -? gives command not found. I recall something like init.d to restart
I am a noob
:-/
Unix 101?
unix 101?
i haven't a clue
apache2ctl restart
or something like that
luv your humour dude
need to be root with root's shell
or you could use the full path
am root via ssh
/usr/sbin/apache2ctl restart or /sbin/apache2ctl restart
close, usr/sbin/...
i'm assuming this is a deb box... it sounded like a deb box
/usr/sbin/apache2ctl restart ...
deb
and yup graceful is ok
btw, now I get a listing instead of a html page. BTW also have php5 installed
could always read the doco, I guess.... but that takes time-got any spare?
It's sunday.
If that answers anything.
p.s. and webalizer. looks good too.
I would like it to load index.html or better yet index.php
any tips?
MalibuStacy ain't got rewrite loaded
aye
DirectoryIndex
DirectoryIndex is http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/mod/mod_dir.html#directoryindex or http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_dir.html#directoryindex
IfModule--
^
yes?
looks like the kids are on MapleStory again. lag lag lag
can a server load affect a ping? NOT theoraticlly
wrong chan i think o
oL
:p *
depends if the icmp is prioritized or not
yes it can.
read what fajita said about DirectoryIndex
hahaha
:/
ok, will do that; tomorrow...
prioritization would only effect the degree to which the latency is increased as it relates to load.
30 [on a single CPU machine] ?
hi folks. I need to redirect incoming requests to mydomain.com to mydomain.com/my_app, because everything from there is run off my_app. are there any htaccess gurus in here that can help me on this one?
i restarted after every configuration change of course... sorry, thats just my gf's subdomain. complain to her :-p
and generally speaking, icmp is treated with very low priority, so it would be one of the earliest protocols to feel the effect of load
RedirectMatch permanent ^/$ /my_app
assuming you're running a recent version of apache. if not, you'll have to specify the complete url as the last argument
that really depends on the system, and what type of load and how much context switching is going on etc.. etc.. etc..
ACK, ACK
works great. thx
apache2 -S has not changed since the last time i ran it...
(:
if the server is a pc that's likely, but if it is some other device (like a wireless unit) icmp is sometimes high priority by default
so what do i do now? make the 'default' load as last vhost?
is there a way to post a 301 header while doing it though? seo purpose
uh, huh?
why would you run a server off a wireless ...thing...?
ummm ok.
when i move 000-default to z99-default he uses debiangirls.de as default...
301 moved permanently...
did you read faq1?
faq1
exactly. For example, NameVirtualHost *:80 must be used with VirtualHost *:80
where does apache2 -S get the 'default server' from?
or
cause I'm a comms dude and use wireless thingies heaps. the ios is ususally x'nix based and the config is done via http
see the directive, where it says 'permannt'
NamveVirtualHost
alright guys, i got mod_rewrite enabled
NameVirtualHost
HEH
NameVirtualHost is http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/core.html#namevirtualhost or http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/core.html#namevirtualhost or
You must specify only one NameVirtualHost directive, hopefully with an IP address or a *. It says on which interfaces should Apache listen to name based vhosts requests, nothing more.
now i'm not allowed to watch the side
*site*
get a 403 forbidden
the first vhost loaded is the default vhost.
see /topic
alright
and if that vhost hast no ServerName, where does apache get its name from?
hostname?
sorry to be a total noob, but, can u suggest a quick and easy howto for apache?
nope. well.. uhm.... wait.
waiting....
waiting is the hardest bit
it is
OK, smokinmoe.
ha, that was the missing clue
thumbs, noodl -- did we put Roobarb-Work's simple httpd.conf into the Wiki to wikify it?
dunno what you're referring to, sorry
I take that as No.
maybe a #apache-noobs would help...
gah, refering
thank you very much for your patience. that counts for megaspaz and everyone else who helped as well )
http--
I'm not sure if any of us are paitient/tolerent enough to man that channel.
also, i'm more of a M$ guy than a x'nix.
i'm not following you...
just explaining why i am thick...
OK, smokinmoe.
good fajita, you really should'nt follow people
now back to that directory block in my vhosts... can i just leave them out completely or is it important to have one for document root?
i get a 403 although the .htaccess belongs to the webserver. there are no restrictions set in the .htaccess, all other sites work fine. when i remove .htaccess this site works fine as well. i only got some rewrite rules in there
i tried adding "allow for all" as well
you're looking in the wrong log most likely. at a guess, you're not allowed rewrite rules in .htaccess. for that, you need AllowOverride FileInfo and Options FollowSymlinks to be set on the directory containing your stuffs
please stop feeding fajita crap......
if your serious, sorry, if not he seems to like it
fajita?
i am a she.
^
yep
does it matter? so sorry, won't happen again!
meh
Bah.
Can't find simple-httpd.conf......
That was thumbs', mine and Roobarb-Work's [our slave] go at a httpd for n00bs...
I can find DirectoryIndex and I get how it works. I'll have a gander (that means look in Australia)
Looks like we've slacked off quite a bit....
a2enmod dir
a2enmod dir ??
you're on Debian, right...?
a2enmod enables mod_dir
mod_dir
mod_dir is http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/mod_dir.html or http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_dir.html
Etch
DirectoryIndex
DirectoryIndex is http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/mod/mod_dir.html#directoryindex or http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_dir.html#directoryindex
Refers to mod_dir
Great, isn't it....
yeah I got that link open now
And are reading it, I hope....
isn't mod_autoindex related?
yep, that's why I am slow to respond....
using nano to edit and ^W to search but DirectoryIndex is not found in apache2.conf
it's not in there.
Again. This is Debian.
grep -R DirectoryIndex /etc/apache2/*
yields nada (it's not in there). did I mention I have php5, is it likely to be elsewhere?
Debian r4.0 (Etch)
I don't understand why you have 2.0 and not 2.2.....
let me check ver
apache 2.2.3
Weird.. didn't they got rid of that RedirectMatch crap... or is that just Ubuntu?
I'll check the guide I followed and see where DirectoryIndex is, I do recall seeing it b4
bI'll check the guide I followed and see where DirectoryIndex is, I do recall seeing it b4/b
Or where it is...
I did say that I have no man or doc installed. 'Cause I followed a guide
it's a lite install
aha...
That's a great idea...
Then get yourself another machine and do a full install to read the docs.
Or read them online.
docs.debian.org or something...
yeah but it cost, I have to read doc elsewhere
what, exactly, does it cost?
What machine are we talking about?
ok dude, ta for the help. I won't bother you now
If it's some mini device, why are you running httpd? And not boa or something...
boa?
boa is a teeny-weeny single tasking web server, available at: http://www.boa.org/
FYI, it's a PII-233 with 256MB, 3gb hdd and 6gb hdd
I prefer apache, it's a standard eveywhere
what?
what? what?
plenty. I personally have a PIII 550MHz with 384MB, 10GB and 15GB.
you kill me. my pc is a PII-350 with 512Mb and Win2k. It does all I need...
thats my workhorse
~distro layout
my workhorse is erm... Intel Core2 T5500 with 1GB of RAM and 120GB SATA HDD.
fajita, distro layout
See http://wiki.apache.org/httpd/DistrosDefaultLayout for clues on how your distro mangles or organises its Apache package(s)
appreciate the suggestion but I do want it to do more than just server basic web. just need to learn more...
huh?
u speak english?
excuse me?
why u don't understand, am I not making sense?
remeber I have bad lag and answer you 2 or 3 comments later
u sp34k 1337?!
at least u get it...
fajita = bot.
what?
bot?
I am a bot. I am not a sentient being. I cannot hold intelligent conversations.
bot?!
I'm *not* a bot! I'm a real girl
sorry dude, got that wrong
guys where i have to place mod_xx.so files in apache 2 under ubuntu??
fajita is a very nice girl. just watch and see....
uhm... you would usually use apt-get to do that for you ---- or, if you compile them yourself you would let apxs2 do it for you.
what does fajita translate to in english? Jane or Mary or sommin like that?
fanny?
lunch.
lunch is a couple of beers
ha hah aha hahahahha
google images fajita
will do
Tastes quite good, I suppose.
i c
translates to "eat me"...
luv u guys, chat elsewhere shall we? leave this place to tech help?
am i here?
great.. You've silenced the entire channel.
lag... . . . . . . .
yeah, i have a habit...
they're just trying to decide whether to boot me or not.
hehe
if a tree falls in the forrest and nobody is there to hear it, does it make any noise?
i make plenty
if i enter a chat room does anybody hear me?
apche.conf DirectoryIndex, here we come :/
ciao
quit
close
exit
what is it now?
slash quit
oh yeah, alt f4
Alt+F4 doesn't quit my irssi....
gets me another terminal
xp
:
the guide i followed is at www.howtoforge.com/perfect_setup_debian_etch
it works great but doesn't install many defaults like man pages and docs, hence I'm here 2 get help
silence is golden
Here to get help with debian manpages?
no, here 2 get help with apache, der
hello everyone!
the DirectoryIndex line is in /etc/apache2/mods-available/dir.conf
fajita, jMCg, where r u guys and gals?
wish i knew, smokinmoe
how do i add "www" dirs to apache running under debian, is it like the vhosts in windows?
I just changed system and are not that familuar with linux
apache is apache, fesits2k
so after all that u still talkin to me, good on you....
I was gone. fajita's always here.
0PM where I am, what about
it's not perfect then. [if it doesn't install any docs..]
Jesus, find a friend
nah, good point. it installed perfectly though!
with a little help....
well thank's for that answer jpeg, can anyone tell me where the conf file is located then?
which conf?
apache?
apache is the wrong tool for that.
the apache one
you're running debian so there's about twelvety bazillioin of them. see:
/etc/apache2/*
distro layouts
distro layouts is http://wiki.apache.org/httpd/DistrosDefaultLayout
ok, thanks
twelvert billionsky and one, 2 be exact
^^
well should i change linux system?
sorry, twelvert bazillion-sky and one....
i need a system that's not windows and as fast as possible
no, still worng. twelverty bazillion-sky....
so deb (or other linux) is a good choice
^^ ok
but to go from graphics to a command prompt is kinda hard ^^ sorry for the stupid questions
questions like that tend to start holy wars on this network. use what works, but we have a particular dislike for debian, just because of its manged apache config
hopefully 2k is not win2k?
mangled even
u guys talking behind my back?
no ^^
so why are there answers without q's?
just being fecisious
no, that's not fecees'ious
or faeces'ious
spell facetious
'facetious' may be spelled correctly
no that's not it ^
it's faeces (dictionary.reference.com)
what is the address to the faq page at apache?
faq
can't seem to find the link
faq is *http://httpd.apache.org/docs/misc/FAQ.html
TY
but it's rather out of date
well i just need to read about the vhosts directive
i guess its the same as always
u have to read between the lines dude
and use your nous to work out how it applies to the lates version. it's a big job!
VirtualHost
VirtualHost is http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.2/mod/core.html#virtualhost or http://httpd.apache.org/docs/vhosts/ also see VirtualHost *:80
c, fajita knows!
i know that steamrollers don't roll steam!
and that vacuums don't work in a vacuum (i tried this one!)
am I off topic, or keeping ppl awake?
a little of both. still, the vacuum thing is interesting. presumably because there's no air to move around?
you really thought about that one didn't u?
try sucking through a straw, you'll get the idea....
i did, i'll admit. first about why they wouldn't work, then more about how on earth you'd conduct such an experiment.
air that is
total vacuums are hard to find
you guys r serious aren't you? I was just joshin'
we're geeks, of course we're serious
noodl++
yeah but geeks are cool; just need to let themselves be
don't let anyone tell you otherwise (revenge of the nerds part 1 2 3 4)
ad infinitum.......
that doesn't cut it. You have to make it fibonacci numbers.
jMCg++
beaten again!
getting heaps of learnin' done, I am
not
schhttp://xkcd.com/
uh
http://xkcd.com/
^
?
ah, v funny
do u like the sarcasm or the romance best?
or is it the math?
or da language?
all of the above....
the language. http://xkcd.com/c181.html
schhttp isn't that schlep http?
yeah, amusing but not funny. 4 me anyways
i see the humour I just don't laugh, not obscure enough. don't need to think about it so no reward
I like either subtle or just blatantly IN YOUR FACE
there's some of that too in xkcd.
hint, hover your mouse over the picture.
c182 is funnier
yeah, but its local humour (who is fennyman?)
feynman
feynman++
global humour doesn't need translation
feynman++
like the index finger
what language is it?
..|.._
sorry too many fingers ..|._
use you imagination and hold your right hand up....
is that a new way to get f@#'ed?
to say get.....
might use that again somewhere!
feynman=atomic bomb, very amusing. poor bloke. bet he wishes he didn't!
he was a percussionist, among other things.
yeah, he made things go bang!
have you read "surely you're joking, my feynman"? one of the funniest books i've read
yup
no, but i will.
hehe, yeah. handly skill
uhm... is it really like that: http://www.asofterworld.com/index.php?id=236 ??
just saw that there is a physisists coloring book; now that's funny (The Richard Fenyman Coloring Page)
feynman, sorry
I could say that feynman is a funnyman, couldn't I?
if i spell it fenyman
perhaps you should also consider joining ##linux ? your homour seems right on par
it's getting quite annoying
as opposed to all the technical stuff that is being discussed?
I see no technical stuff under discussion, and would forbid it if I did - it is Sunday, after all
double-adaptr, yes?
being married? yeah, but you gain a bigger chunk, when it works
thanks noodl. That's great. I'll try to remember it when my kids start disembowelling me.
smokinmoe I have no idea; you have been judged unfunny so I will not listen to you lest my mind is poisoned with real facts
i using mod_jk1.2 with apache2
when i define workers2.properties i am getting error
http://confluence.atlassian.com/display/DISC/Connect+using+Apache+mod_jk2
i tried this approach
i expect you'd get a fuller response if you ran mod_proxy_ajp instead (or mod_proxy_http). apache2.what?
yes apache2
apache2 is a name debian based distros give to the httpd-2.0 release
but i am trying to integrate jboss with apache
http://www.jboss.org/wiki/Wiki.jsp?page=UsingMod_jk1.2WithJBoss
noodl, any help?
i meant apache 2.what as in 2.0 or 2.2?
when i start apache it gives that loadbalancer is not recognized
well how can i see the version ??
is any tool which creates automatically a website (with consistent drop-down menus etc) ?
yes, hundreds of them. try google
I was wondering something else than FrontPage - I would prefer an open source tool
I used ms frontpage and it is amazing indeed - however as I said I would like open source and linux apache environment
noodl, i am not sure of the version
it is apache 2
i used apt-get
httpd -v
frontpage? amazing ?
or apache2 -v as you're running debian
apache 2.2.3
good job. i'm not saying mod_jk is bad, but if you'd use mod_proxy_http or mod_proxy_ajp instead, you'll likely get more help here
but there is no documentation from jboss for that
http://webgen.rubyforge.org/ is one i found recently. but it's not a frontpage replacement, more like a set of tools for html generation
thanks
do you know anything about moodle ?
nope, sorry
it sound similar to your nick though
as does poodl, but i'm not that hairy
noodle, shall i used mod_proxy or mod_proxy_ajp??
*use
both. mod_proxy requires a provider module for protocol support
do you know how to do that?
in general, it should be as simple as switching from http to afp in your proxy directives to chose between them
rverse proxy
uh
reverse proxy
reverse proxy is http://www.apachetutor.org/admin/reverseproxies
get that working first
then try using ajp
there's also:
ftwai
ftwai is http://people.apache.org/~mturk/docs/article/ftwai.html
http://confluence.atlassian.com/display/DOC/Using+Apache+with+mod_proxy
is this fine??
there's nothing wrong with mod_jk per se. just, the current focus of development is on mod_proxy and its provider module, unifying previously disparate modules like mod_jk, mod_proxy and even mod_fastcgi.
meaning that in the long run support will be easier because it's just a matter of switching protocol providers
and there's only one person on this channel who's regular enough and can answer questions about mod_jk (lamp, see, i told you about your new job
ok
fine thanks
you might try #tomcat though, in case there's somebody awake
i am seeing that in apache2 .. there are no LoadModule entry
though i gather java developers have to sleep all weekend to recover
how is apache2 loadmodules
loadmodule hasn't changed much between versions, though Addmodule died. perhaps you're looking in the wrong file, or have a static hosting build (hint: httpd -l)
there is no httpd in ubuntu
yeah, it's apache2
just to make our lives harder
how can i load modules in apache2
a2enmod
a2enmod is a script available on debian and ubuntu systems that enables modules by symlinking files from mods-available to mods-enabled. there's a2dismod too.
i have a mod_proxy_html.so
how can load
a2enmod
a2enmod is a script available on debian and ubuntu systems that enables modules by symlinking files from mods-available to mods-enabled. there's a2dismod too.
it will automatically loads??
that's the mech that loads the modules
so what do you think?
hi
Hi!
hello! How are you today??
i'd installed apache under ubuntu and now i want to start a php-file-upload-script but i get an error. http://pics.salooo.org/uploads/ad5487568f.png -- there's a screenshot. i'd given imgupload 777
and how can i change my charset? ^
777?
There is never an appropriate time to set a file mode of 777. And don't tell me it's just a test server
no, i'm an absolutly noob
what comes to mod file libphp5.so its not installed on a make install which one i need to install order for me to have libphp5.so?
huh? you talking about the php hosting source tarball?
What? http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-tag/2003Sep/0176.html
in /usr/local/libexec/apahce22 i don't see that file libphp5.so how well i install that?
what distro is this?
php5-extensions
must be a new distro
never heard of it
what os or what linux distro you using if you're using linux
freebsd has the ports that installs the php5-extensions
no i m not using linux i m on unix
don't know a thing about the ports, but can you specify compile options?
sure..
what do you wan me to specify?
because the php compilation requires --with-apxs2=/path/to/apache_install/bin/apxs
with the path being your real path that is
that's the info needed for compilation of php to build the apache module...
i m not sure about that..
well considering i've installed apache/php/mysql/etc from source, i'm sure of it
a bajillion times
*shrugs*
or go ask in #fbsd
thank you megaspaz
+r
let me do more search on the web..
what are possible alternatives for mod_cband ..?
bandwidth
bandwidth is see netnice mod_bandwidth mod_throttle mod_bwshare mod_cband mod_bw mod_tsunami mod_evasive mod_limitipconn/please share your experiences with any of these
thank you, any other alternatives available? i'd like to try out some
you need more O_o?
9 are not enough?
Wow, 7 isn't enough? :p
Oops, 9?
the only ones i know about are what's in fajita's brainz....
can anyone tell me of something that parses access_log and error_log into some sort of compiled format? i'd like to see if theres a certain dedicated ip hosting hammering pages, or bruteforcing some http login i've made
iam8up, splunk.com
that too
oh
there are 9 listed
i've been using grep for a while, i was hoping for something more eye pleasing
that should do it, thanks
checking out splunk right now, though
heh
yeah... well the output would just be lines of the log file... i guess it wouldn't be eye pleasing... but it'd be the complete request
so splunk won't group them together?
oh... i dunno.... i don't use splunk
for example; i've a utility that writse to a log file, each line it writes is an occurance of someone exceeding a limit of a certain type of packet
so now this log just dumps an ip address every once and a while, has no organization to it
then i made a tcsh script that re-works everything out to look liek this: http://iam8up.com/godmodders/
then i made a tcsh script that re-works everything out to look liek this: a href="http://iam8up.com/godmodders/"http://iam8up.com/godmodders//a
then i made a tcsh script that re-works everything out to look liek this: a href="a href="http://iam8up.com/godmodders/"http://iam8up.com/godmodders//a"http://iam8up.com/godmodders/"http://iam8up.com/godmodders//a/a
it only detects one thing - excessive sending of a certain packet
yeah, i'd just egrep the line and parse out the ip address
simple
Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler
()http://www.faqs.org/faqs/unix-faq/shell/csh-whynot/
iunno that works pefectly for me...took a few minutes...
iam8up, awk '{print $1}' /path/to/log | sort | uniq -c | sort -rn | head -10
coallate them into a hash using the ip as the key with running count as the value
compare the running count to some limit value and ban-ola!
23 28
that helps me how?
lines that look like what?
megaspaz - those two values i pasted
i was talking about parsing that generated file you linked here
4.876140 dedicated ip hosting 201.74.190.57 : 0000 2751 0000 0013
but you massage it to that link format
so you might as well just use what you massaged
actually you don't even need a hash
since the error is maximum occurances and you have a number
all across the board =/
you can do your data analysis in one go
just parse out the number in front of the error and the ip
141.153.135.124 2
193.151.57.2 31 maximum occurrences exceeded for 193.151.57.2!
yeah
i'm assuming 31 is the attempts
correct
What is correct depends entirely on what you're trying to do
take ip and ban it
yet it looks like 1 193.151.57.2
*= attempt_limit
oh i see what you're saying
you've got all the information there
already
it to the ipban list
you don't really need much else
yeah
something like that
awesome i got it working.. thank you megaspaz
but now getting back to apache's logs - that's where i want to do something like this, only not make my own script to do so (especially when there will be many different levels and types of notices)
oh well... um ok... i don't have much experience with log parsers, so um... g'luck?
always check your /var/log/httpd-error.log
he's looking to parse that, looking for special error lines he generates from his login app
lol; i get a mail from it every day that kind of does some parsing, but thanks
i m having issues with my domain name the ip address is working.. this what i have done so far. can you please see if i done it correct. http://dpaste.com/14502/

read
please read the links and faqtoids I send as they are useful and can often help you find the answers you are looking for. If people start ignoring them, then maybe I'll stop sending them
oh yea? did netcraft confirm it?
bugger all, i dunno, megaspaz
tell me about experiences users had with these alternatives to mod_cband
excuse me?
stupid bot
Dumb human.
yeah
`mac: is this an internal domain name only?
yes sir
what's the best mod there...in your opinion? what i need is actually just a limitation for the bandwidth, nothing more
well the popular ones i've seen are mod_cband and mod_dosevasive
i think mod_tsunami has the best name though...
*shrugs*
hehehe
rofl? ERROR: The http port [8000] is already bound. Splunk needs to use this port.
Would you like to change ports? [y/n]:
if it needs to use those ports, why can you change it?
so cband is a good choice, in general...? :P
ok, that's a vague question
yar
i m not sure what i can do.. anything that i can read?
just the bind manual is all i can think of
i don't run internal name server so i have no real idea

did i put my zone wrong or whats going on..
Hello #apache lords. When specifying the range header on a dynamic application, is it apache that handles that or must the application support it? For example if I know the length of the dynamically generated page and want to byte range request it must the app support it or does apache handle
all that? Thanks
`mac, aint there some #named channel or #bind or whatever?
zeno-: You want to serve the first 'n' bytes of a dynamically generated page?
no there is none. but thank you for the info
#dns then?
debian apache
noirin yes
debian php
debian php is here http://wiki.apache.org/httpd/ScratchPad/DebianPHP
^^
there is nothing wrong my my dns.. its apache problem ..
that might help you out
zeno-: The app has to support that, I think
ok thx
noirin wordpress handles it I noticed but wasn't sure

Hello! I am running debian with apache2. I had some problems earlier but got those resolved, now I am running into: http://pastebin.ca/620778. I am also attempting to setup virtualnamehosting. Anyone have a fix for the issues I'm having and could help me
w/ VNH?

Pop along to http://wiki.apache.org/httpd/DistrosDefaultLayout for an idea on where the main distros place Apache files.

Okay, I fixed httpd.conf now returning new errors: http://pastebin.ca/620796
don't load that module
websitea.com and websiteb.com, websitea has a cname wild card entry *.websitea.com and a serveralias of *.websitea.com.. so everything.websitea.com works, now I've added a www cname entry to websiteb.com to point to websiteb.websitea.com, when I browse to websiteb.websitea.com everything
works, but www.websiteb.com doesn't work. . what am I doing wrong?
